Goodbye 2010, Hello 2011! - Fratellowatches.com

Dear readers of this blog,

We are only few hours away from 2011! I am pretty sure that 2011 will be an exciting year for (haute) horlogerie. In 2010, we’ve seen a lot of new watches that were really out of this world, such as The Palace by Jean Dunand, the Rebellion T-1000 and Max Busser’s HM No.4. Besides these, we’ve seen re-incarnations of classic time pieces such as the Rolex Explorer in 39mm, the Bulova Accutron Spaceview and the Glycine Airman Base 22. And everything in between of course. My friend Frank Geelen of Monochrome did a nice write-up on the best timepieces of 2010 and I wholeheartedly agree with his choice of timepieces.

So, what will 2011 bring us? We’ve seen some great previews for the SIHH2011 already, like the Tribute to 1931 Reverso by Jaeger-LeCoultre for example. Personally, I can’t wait to see some of the new horological promises by Audemars Piguet, Rolex, Grönefeld Exclusive Timepieces, Linde Werdelin’s new chronograph and so on.

What about Fratellowatches in 2011? Well,rolex replica, I will continue to blog about watches and will do my best trying to increase the number of articles. You can – again -  expect in-depth coverage on novelties, BaselWorld, SIHH, GTE and other watch events. More importantly, I will keep voicing my opinion on watches,rolex replica, the watch industry and what more. Keep in mind that this is my personal blog and therefore always reflects my personal opinion on watches, brands, watch books, events etc.

Besides Fratellowatches and my regular job, I am currently working for a number of other media (e.g. AskMen, MotoringExposure, WATCH Magazine, WatchUseek and others) as much as I can, which I will also continue to do in 2011 of course.

To be able to take this shot, Martin had to set the shutter speed of his camera to 1/100th, using two speedlights wrapped into plastic to protect them for the splashing Submersible. Ofcourse, the camera was mounted on a tripod for a steady shot.

Browsing through the catalogue of MARCH LA.B is like watching an episode of HBO’s Mad Men. As a tribute to vintage watches, MARCH LA.B introduced a line-up of interesting timepieces that wouldn’t look bad on Don Draper’s followers.

Clearly being a ‘design’ brand,fake watch, which normally would not be something that appeals to me, the models they’ve created are very similar to the real thing of the 1960s. After having had a look at their website, I was even more certain that the people behind the MARCH LA.B brand are very capable of providing great design and creating interesting timepieces.

Obviously, they are not targeting at watch collectors or aficionados only, as they also incorporated quartz (Ronda) movements which is a pity in my opinion, as they are leaving out a large group of people that otherwise would be even more interested in buying a MARCH LA.B watch.

On the other hand,hublot replika, using a quartz movement does keep the price under a certain (affordable) level and – you wouldn’t think so – a lot of people still don’t seem to be caring about mechanical movements anyway ; – ).

One of the watches from the catalogue that grabbed my attention is the AM1 Automatic _Black. A 40mm mechanical timepiece with that typical 1960s case design, dial and hands. Even the wording ‘Automatic’ uses a typical 1960s font that could probably be found on the dashboard of certain cars as well, in chrome of course. This watch comes on a black leather lizard strap and has a crown at 4 o’clock.

The movement that MARCH LA.B used is an ETA 2892-A2 with the company logo engraved in the rotor.

A Timeless Tale Report

A few weeks ago, I reported about the Timeless Tale expo over at the Rolex boutique in Berlin (as part of the Wempe emporium). Some friends of the Dutch Rolex Forum went to Berlin to see the most important watches in the history of Rolex. Rolex Forum regular sBmRnR published their report in this thread, including some nice pictures of the trip and the Rolex Boutique. The report is in Dutch, so here is a small summary in English:

The Rolex Boutique at the famous Kurfurstendamm in Berlin. They had a lot of pieces of their current collection on display, even the stainless steel Daytona ref.116520 was available. Although I noticed that some other authorized dealers have them on display every now and then as well. List price and market price never were so close I believe.

Inside, Rolex displayed their most important or better yet, meaningful watches of their 105 years of existence. The first Oyster case, the Deepsea, Sir Edmund Hillary’s original Rolex… they were all there. Let’s have a look at a few of them:

Here is the original Deepsea, on a rivet bracelet. This watch survived the famous 10916 meter dive in the Marianas Trench on the 23rd of January 1960. The watch was on the hull of the Triest submersible. Fellow blogger Roger Ruegger has done a nice article on this particular watch for his Dive Watches Blog (which is in German).

On the left you see Sir Edmund Hillary’s Oyster Perpetual watch and on the right,quality watch replica, the first Oyster Perpetual Explorer (1953). I believe sherpa Norgay wore a Rolex as well and Sir Edmund Hillary is known to have worn other watches during is climbs.

One of my personal favorite Rolex watches is the Day-Date model, launched in 1956 (above is the first model). The first automatic chronometer watch with a day and date indicator,italian leather bags supplier, shown above with the famous President bracelet. On the right, the Rolex Milgauss. For a long time, even during the 1980s, no-one wanted to have a Milgauss. Look at these little treasures now during auctions.. you wish you or your father/grandfather bought a few on sale…

What Started It Bruno Rubinksi's AP Royal Oak!

Someone over at TimeZone’s AP forum asked the following simple question: Which AP started it for you? My answer needed some extra work, as Audemars Piguet’s 1998 catalogue (simply called #1, as part of a trilogy of catalogues) says it all for me. AP asked fashion entrepreneur Bruno Rubinski why he chose the AP Royal Oak (‘Jumbo’) and printed that in their catalogue.

Now, there is no sponsoring story or sleek copy-write article in there, just Bruno Rubinski explaining why he loves that watch and that he bought it pre-owned and in a poor condition. To me,leather bag italy, the story sounded quite authentic (although I assume at least someone reviewed it ; – ) ) and I think AP showed a lot of guts printing it in their catalogue. It is at least something different from ambassadors promoting a watch they got for free.

Below is a picture of his (now rare) ref.14802 or 15002, I am not sure about that. Both are rare finds these days though.

This is the AP that started it for me,cheap designer purses wholesale, the Royal Oak. Some hate it (actually a lot of people), some grow towards it and only few call it love at first sight. I belong to the last category I’m afraid.

AP Royal Oak 15300 more interesting than the 15202 (a.k.a Jumbo)

When I borrowed the AP Royal Oak Offshore Rubber Clad from Watch-Site, I got the AP Royal Oak 15300 as well. Just to do some look & feel on this watch. Not too long ago, I was a bit reluctant on this particular model, since there was only one Royal Oak, and that was the Royal Oak Jumbo, also known as the ’15202ST’. I have written many times on this Jumbo by Audemars Piguet, saying it was my dream watch or number 1 or 2 (this position changes back and forth with the PP Nautilus 5711/1A) watch that I need to have somewhere in life.

Friends of mine have the 15202 and are quite clear on the 15300. A no-brainer, because of the second hand with the ‘wing’ on the short tip, the movement and the thickness of this watch. The movement used in the 15202 is indeed a beauty. However, I think that focusing on movement only is not something you should be doing. It should be the whole package of design, usability/wearability, price etc. that needs to be right. Besides a different movement (AP caliber 2121 vs 3120), the 15300 is a bit more masculine than the 15202 Jumbo. One of the first things that got my attention was the look & feel of the entire watch. The stainless steel watch case (39mm) and bracelet with satin finish is heavier than the 15202. Not only in weight, but also in the construction of the case and bracelet. The bracelet of the 15300 feels solid and the size is just right, as opposed to the bracelet on the 15202 Jumbo, which feels a bit fragile.

I am probably stepping on toes of purists here,man watch, and I am a bit amazed myself as well, that this watch gives me this impression. Given the price of the 15300 – market price approx.6500 euro versus approx 8500 euro for a 15202 – I don’t know if I would care enough for the caliber 2121 of the 15202 to pay almost 2000 euro premium for it. I think I prefer a case and bracelet that are more convenient and wearable than having the cult version (15202) with a movement that is more sought after.

The dial of this white fellow is pretty neat as well with its famous pattern of the AP RO and applied logo. The hands and hour markers are made out of 18kt gold. The only downside of the dial is the lettering of Audemars Piguet and Automatic. The font is a bit too bold,rolex submariner replica, and they could have left ‘Audemars Piguet’ off the dial completely, as the applied logo makes it clear that you have an AP anyway. However, this wouldn’t be a dealbreaker for me personally.

When handling an AP Royal Oak, I am always impressed by the finish of the case and dial. The satin structure of the stainless steel (or gold) is true craftmanship and way more impressive than let’s say, my IWC Ingenieur 3227-01. When you touch the bracelet of the AP Royal Oak, you can actually feel the satin brushed lines on there. When you do the same with an Ingenieur for example, you just feel a smooth surface.

The caliber 3120 movement in this watch is a real beauty. The 22k gold rotor with impressive engravings covers the 4.25mm flat movement (which is very flat) inside the 15300. The sapphire displayback gives an excellent view on this small masterpiece. I don’t know if it’s because this transparant caseback, but the watch is only guaranteed water resistant for 50 meters (5 bar). This isn’t very much for a watch that is considered to be ‘sporty’.

Taking the price of this particular watch (it’s for sale at Watch-Site) into consideration, 5750 Euro, dated 12-2007 complete with box and papers, it is a very interesting stainless steel sportswatch, that still breathes the ‘cult’ of Genta’s original design of the 1970s. Given the price and the updated design, the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak ref.15300ST could be more interesting to buy than the iconic Royal Oak ‘Jumbo’ ref.15202ST.

Just recently, Montblanc held a watch event in The Hague, The Netherlands. Just a week after the SIHH2011 exhibition in Geneva, Montblanc showed us some of their new models. As established as this company from Hamburg is with regards to writing instruments, their timepieces did not get much attention from collectors until Montblanc took over the Minerva factory. With Montblanc’s Villeret and Rieussec collection, they stole the hearts of many collectors of haute horlogerie timepieces. I examined their collection carefully, and picked a favorite that I could see myself wearing at some point in the future. The new Vintage Pulsographe.

The Vintage Pulsographe with its black dial and rose gold case measures only 39mm in size, which is very modest for a chronograph. Due to the size (12mm in height) it looks fabulous and does justice to the ‘vintage’ part in its name. The Arabic numerals on the enamel dial and the pulsations scale really reminds us of the 1930s. Only 58 pieces of each Vintage Pulsographe model (available in white and red gold) will be produced, referring to the year 1858. In 1858, the Minerva watch factory was found.

Inside, Montblanc in-house manufactured caliber MB13.21 movement ticks at 18.000 beats per hour, just as they did during the 1930s. I really love these 18.000bph movements, and like to listen to them as they gently tick away our time. The column-wheel control and horizontal wheel coupling are signs of true chronograph craftsmanship of this monopusher timepiece. The operator of the chronograph uses a single button to start, stop and reset the chronograph.

During the event in The Hague, besides gazing at this marvelous collection of watches,wholesale high quality leather custom handbags, visitors were also invited to a little contest to demonstrate their (possible) watch making skills. Today,rolex gmt ii replica, WorldTempus put my latest Chronicle on-line. This article (or Chronicle,discount wholesale handbags, as WorldTempus calls them) is about Bremont watches. I wrote about Bremont before (here and here), but in this Chronicle I wonder whether people are going to choose for a Bremont over a watch of one of the established brands. So, is this Bremont ALT1-P for example the new Flieger Chronograph in town?
